EV owners have several charging options available, each with its advantages and drawbacks. There are 3 main EV charging methods: wall outlet charging, Alternating Current (AC) EV chargers, and Direct Current (DC) EV Chargers.

Wall Outlet Charging

US Market

Wall Outlet Charging is categorised into Level 1 (120V) and Level 2 (240V) charging in the United States (US).

Level 1 charging, which uses a standard household outlet, provides a relatively slow charge. On average, it can add between 1 to 4 kilometres of range every 10 minutes. This means that achieving 100km of driving range could take several hours. As such, Level 1 charging may only be suitable for EV owners with minimal daily travel requirements, typically less than 100km.

Level 2 charging requires plugging the power outlet with either a NEMA 6-50 or NEMA 14-50 plug. It can provide around 4 to 8 hours from empty to full charge depending on the vehicle's battery capacity and the charger's output power.

EU Market

Wall outlet charging in the European Union (EU) market is categorised into Mode 1 and Mode 2 charging. Both modes utilise 230V standard household outlets.

Mode 1 EV charging uses a standard power outlet with a simple extension cord. It is characterised by its slow charging speed, providing approximately 0.5 to 1 km range every 10 minutes. Given the extended charging time associated with Mode 1, it is generally not a practical option for regular EV charging needs.

Mode 2 EV charging uses a standard socket outlet with an in-cable control box (ICCB). Its charging speed is slightly faster, typically providing 1 to 2 km of range every 10 minutes. Although Mode 2 charging is marginally faster than Mode 1 charging, it is still considerably slower than charging from a dedicated EV charger.

EV owners who frequently travel long distances should consider installing a dedicated EV charger to achieve longer driving ranges in shorter charging periods.

Pros and Cons of Wall Outlet Charging
ProsCons

- Low Initial Cost: This method requires little to no additional equipment, making it the most economical option.

- Simple to use: This method uses plug-and-play usage and is extremely convenient for home charging.

- Low Charging Speed: Level 1 charging can take 20 to 40+ hours for a full charge, depending on the vehicle's battery capacity. Even Level 2 can take 8-12 hours.

- Potential safety risk: The high continuous load on standard outlets not designed for EV charging can lead to overheating or electrical faults.

AC EV Chargers

AC EV chargers charge the EV with AC with AC, where the onboard charger within the EV will convert the AC to DC. The AC EV Chargers are referred to as Level 2 chargers in the US and Mode 3 chargers in the EU. AC chargers generally provide power outputs ranging from 3.6kW to 12kW in the US and 3.6kW to 22kW in the EU.

Pros and Cons of AC EV Chargers
